ニュージーランド出身の英語教育者です。日本の公立小中学校と民間の英会話スクールで、こども、10代、大人を10年以上指導してきました。I’m an English educator from New Zealand. For more than ten years, I have taught children, teenagers and adults in Japanese public schools and private English schools.
英語が苦手な時、努力不足が原因とは限りません。説明の仕方が合っていない、練習する順番が違う、間違えることへの不安が強い、そもそも学ぶ内容と使いたい英語がつながっていない。学習者がどこで困っているのかを見つけ、具体的な次の一歩を示すことが、講師の仕事だと考えています。When English feels difficult, the problem is not necessarily effort. The explanation may not fit, the practice may be in the wrong order, anxiety may be getting in the way, or the material may feel disconnected from the English someone actually wants. A teacher’s job is to identify that obstacle and make the next step concrete.
専門知識は、学習者に難しさを見せるためではなく、難しさを減らすために使うものです。Expertise should not display how complicated learning is. It should make learning less complicated.

マオリ語の aroha は、愛情、思いやり、共感、つながりを含む言葉です。ニュージーランドとマオリのルーツを持つ僕にとって、この名前は単なる飾りではありません。学ぶ人を尊重し、その人の目標に本気で向き合うという約束です。In te reo Māori, aroha carries ideas of love, compassion, empathy and connection. As a New Zealander with Māori roots, the name is not decorative. It is a promise to respect the learner and take their goals seriously.
